Castle Acre takes its name from the walled castle built in the 12th-century by the Normans. A rural village in north west Norfolk, it lies four miles north of Swaffham and to the west of the A1065 at the point where the river Nar is crossed by an ancient route known as the Peddars Way. Welcome to Downham Market Town Council website. Downham Market is an historic Town with a well-knit community. Our parish church is on the site of a previous building from the late 900s and is a mixture of 15th century and 19th century structure. It sits on the top of the hill which gives Downham its name. As Noel Coward acknowledged, Norfolk is very flat and so a hill becomes important. Downham means the settlement on the hill.
